One of the Best Experiences in Marrakech Is Hidden inside a Perfume Shop - Nouha Perfumes

Morocco may be best known for its vibrant ancient medinas, the golden dunes of the Sahara Desert, and world-famous cuisine like tagine and couscous, but hidden near one of Marrakech’s most popular souqs is a custom fragrance experience that rivals some of the country’s most famous attractions. Just steps from the bustle of Marrakech’s biggest open-air market, Nouha Perfumes invites visitors to unwind, experience a bit of Morocco’s rich culture through immersive scent exploration, and capture the moment with a custom-blended fragrance keepsake.
The process of creating your custom fragrance at Nouha Perfumes is as laid back and enjoyable as the owner herself, Nouhalia. There’s no appointment setting or rigid step-by-step process. Instead, you walk in and are immediately welcomed by owner Nouhalia and her small team, who greet customers with big smiles and a genuine excitement to help you smell your way through the shop. From there, you’re free to explore at your own pace and create something as simple or complex as you’d like.

Your first stop will likely be a display table filled with somewhere between 50 and 100 fragrance oils, grouped by scent profile and ready to smell. You can start here on your own, picking up anything that catches your attention and figuring out which scent profiles you gravitate toward. Or, if staring at that many bottles feels a bit overwhelming, head straight to the main counter. Behind it, shelves and walls are lined with even more fragrance oils, including gourmands, spicy scents, original creations, and inspirations of popular designer and niche fragrances.
This is where Nouhalia and her staff really shine. Tell them what you normally wear, the notes you love, or simply the type of fragrance you’re hoping to create, and they’ll begin pulling oils for you to smell on tester strips or directly on your skin. You can explore as many as you’d like, comparing different scent families and discovering combinations you may never have thought to put together yourself. For fragrance lovers in particular, it can be incredibly easy to lose track of time here. I know this firsthand—I spent a total of three hours in the store over two days during a five-day trip.
Technically, you can take as long as you need, but Nouha Perfumes is still a working perfume shop rather than a private fragrance consultation. There are usually only two or three people working, including Nouhalia herself, and as the shop fills up, their attention naturally has to be divided among more customers. After about 20 minutes of one-on-one exploration, you may find yourself doing more independent smelling while the team helps new arrivals. If you want the most relaxed experience and plenty of guidance, I recommend arriving early, close to opening at 10:30AM, before the crowds arrive. Visiting Marrakech outside of peak tourist season can also make the experience feel considerably more intimate.

Once you’ve narrowed down your favorites, you get a fun chance to play chemist. You can choose a single fragrance oil and wear it as is, but I think the experience becomes much more memorable when you blend two or even several together to create something of your own. You don’t need to know anything about perfume formulation to do it. Nouhalia has over 15 years of experience in perfumery and is there to help you determine how much of each oil should go into your blend based on the result you’re trying to achieve. For a moment, you get to become the owner of your own fragrance brand, working alongside an experienced perfumer to perfect your first creation.
Nouhalia then blends your chosen oils together, allowing you to get hands on and even step behind the counter to help. Since the shop works primarily with fragrance oils and oil blends, you can keep your finished creation as an oil or have perfumer’s alcohol added if you prefer a traditional spray perfume. As an FYI, the concentration of oil in the spray perfumes is equivalent to an EDP or extrait, meaning these creations will project and last for hours on skin or clothing. The final blend is poured into a 50 ml bottle and labeled with whatever name you choose, turning a morning spent exploring perfume in Marrakech into a keepsake you can continue wearing long after the trip is over.
The finished product is also very affordable, especially considering the experience itself is free. For around $50, you can leave with approximately 50 ml of your custom fragrance—a fraction of what many structured custom-perfume workshops charge. You also aren’t limited to creating just one. If you fall in love with several oils or come up with more than one combination, you can have multiple fragrances blended and bottled during the same visit.
While this is a fun experience in itself, what really makes it memorable is Nouhalia. Born and raised in Marrakech, Nouhalia is a self-taught perfumer with more than 15 years of experience who has spent the past decade building Nouha Perfumes into the shop it is today. Her warmth transforms a simple shopping trip into guided fragrance exploration, where even the most reserved introvert can feel comfortable speaking up and asking for exactly what they’d like—and Nouhalia will always oblige with a smile. Her knowledge of fragrance oils and blending turns what could be an overwhelming wall of unfamiliar scents into an interactive discovery journey.
For perfume lovers visiting Marrakech, Nouha Perfumes is more than somewhere to shop for a souvenir. It’s a chance to experience the city through one of the senses most closely tied to memory and leave with something that captures your trip in a way a traditional souvenir never could. Months or years later, you may not remember every stall you walked past in the souq or every dish you ate, but one spray can transport you right back to a tiny perfume shop in Marrakech, standing behind the counter with Nouhalia and creating a fragrance that exists because you were there.
