What Does Royal by Maa Althahab Smell Like?

Royal opens with a bright, juicy burst of bergamot and black currant that immediately give the fragrance a clean, uplifting feel.

As it develops, the jasmine mixes with the iris and fruity top notes to create a soft and airy scent, reminiscent of blueberry jasmine tea—slightly fruity, lightly floral, and delicately powdery. It never becomes heavy or indolic—and that's coming from someone who usually avoids jasmine perfumes altogether. Royal is a great choice for anyone looking for perfumes with jasmine that remain soft, wearable, and office-friendly all year round.

As the fragrance dries down, creamy vanilla that’s been lightly sweetened with a touch of caramel, blends with soft musk, and the tiniest hint of sandalwood to create a creamy and warm base. The vanilla never feels overly sugary or heavy, but instead provides a soft sweetness and smooth touch to the florals, creating a refined floral gourmand that is noticeably more floral than gourmand and is fresh enough for Spring and Summer.

The Notes

Bergamot, black currant, jasmine, iris, vanilla, caramel, musk, sandalwood

Performance

Out of a brand-new bottle, Royal projects more intimately than many Middle Eastern fragrances, creating a soft to moderate scent bubble for approximately four hours.

However, performance noticeably improves with either:

  • Allowing the bottle to mature for approximately 3–6 months, or
  • Applying additional sprays to clothing

Once matured, projection becomes comfortably moderate while longevity extends from 4-6 hours to approximately 6–8 hours, making it an excellent everyday fragrance that won't overwhelm the people around you.

Who Should Wear Royal by Maa Althahab?

Royal is technically unisex but leans slightly feminine thanks to its sweeter base of vanilla and caramel and lack of heavier base notes like labdanum or woods. It's one of those rare fragrances that feels polished enough for the office while still being interesting enough for your days off.

If you're searching for:

  • A signature scent that's work appropriate
  • Perfumes with vanilla that remain light enough for warmer weather
  • Perfumes with jasmine that aren't overly dense or heavy
  • A fragrance that is slightly sweet without leaning sugary or syrupy
  • A refined and easy-to-wear introduction to Middle Eastern perfumery

Royal is an easy recommendation.

Similar Fragrances

Royal sits somewhere between the powdery cleanliness of Valaya and Dama Bianca and the fruity vanilla warmth of Donna Born in Roma, while carving out its own identity through its airy jasmine tea character.

If Valaya feels a little too clean and Donna Born in Roma feels slightly too rich and sweet, Royal strikes a beautiful middle ground. Fans of Kayali Silk Santal, Jimmy Choo I Want Choo, and other soft fruity vanillas will likely appreciate its balanced sweetness and versatility.

My Thoughts

Royal was the first fragrance I tried from Maa Althahab and its sweet, yet fresh blend was a perfect introduction to the brand and immediately piqued my interest in sampling the rest of their catalogue. It is one of those easy crowd pleasing scents that is the perfect reach when you want to smell good without overwhelming anyone, including yourself,

Many Middle Eastern fragrances lean heavily into rich amber, oud, or spices, but Royal takes a different approach, maintaining the exotic feel, while infusing more airy and delicate accords

Whenever I wear this one, I can consistently smell it on me, but then I will randomly catch a sniff of it in a breeze and feel like I’m almost wrapped in an angelic and soft cloud. I love to wear Royal on its own when I want a softer scent bubble, but also love layering it with some of my denser or spicier scents to help soften their overall feel.

If you're looking for a niche fragrance that balances sweetness, florals, and everyday versatility, Royal is an easy fragrance to recommend.

Royal by Maa Althahab is available in limited quantities in a 75 ml bottle for $120, with samples starting at $7.
